These 3 Mexican Caribbean Destinations Could Completely Sell Out This Winter

With Mexico enjoying what can only be described as its busiest tourism season to date, travelers are no longer guaranteed the warm winter getaway they’ve been dreaming of – hotels in the sunny neighboring country are almost selling out.

That’s especially true for those flocking to the country’s most coveted destinations, which, as you’ll see below, are welcoming unprecedented numbers of tourists eager to explore the region’s wonders.

Now that 2024 travel has officially begun, three Mexican Caribbean hotspots are standing out as the nation’s trendiest hotspots, with occupancy levels going through the roof.

If you’re planning a trip to either Playacar, Akumal, or Cancun this winter, you’ll need to book those tickets ASAP.

Here’s why:

1. Playacar

Hotels in Playa Del Carmen’s most exclusive area are currently at an impressive 83.5% occupancy rate, so those looking to experience the breathtaking views of the region while feeling pampered by those all-inclusive deals need to book their holidays right now.

Standing as the physical representation of the Mexican Caribbean’s luxury travel scene, Playacar is the ultimate oasis where you can escape the stresses of day-to-day life.

You’ll find that the gated community strikes just the right balance between high-end resorts and pristine beaches, while the fact that most places in the area are only accessible through packages that include accommodation, food, drinks, and more will take all of the stressful budgeting and decision-making out of the equation – your only job will be to sit back and relax.

Unlike many other Mexican hotspots known for their buzzing nightlife and young atmosphere, Playacar exudes a more serene type of charm, perfect for couples, families, or just those looking to take in the views of the Caribbean in peace.

While the untouched, powdery white beaches that stretch along the area are undoubtedly the biggest tourist attraction, there’s still a lot more to do around here than just lounge on the soft sand.

Depending on what you’re most interested in, you can explore the nearby Mayan Ruins, take advantage of the local 18-hole golf course, or enjoy the views of the many underwater wonders through diving or snorkeling – better yet, go all out and experience everything the region has to offer.

2. Akumal

Akumal has definitely started off 2024 on the right foot – January isn’t even over yet, and the gorgeous beach town has already established itself as one of Mexico’s trendiest hotspots.

While tourism in the area is having one of its best seasons in history, there are only so many people that can be accommodated within its sq 62 mi.

With a name that literally means “Place of Turtles” most travelers know what they can look forward to when booking a trip to Akumal.

The dreamy resort town is nothing short of a sea turtle sanctuary – the beautiful creatures peacefully swim across its shores, often alongside humans.

That’s why snorkelers and divers find Akumal to be their ultimate spot – well, that and the fact that the area is known for its crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life.

3. Cancun

At this point, no list ranking the most popular Mexican hotspots would be complete without a mention of Cancun, a place so popular and iconic that it holds the title of the most visited beach destination on Earth, and, considering the stiff competition, that’s remarkable.

Surprisingly enough, Cancun just barely made it to the podium this time, standing in at no. 3 with a (still impressive) 80% hotel occupancy – it’s worth remembering, though, that there are quite a lot more hotels and short-term rentals in Cancun than there are in Akumal or Playacar.

So, what these numbers tell us is that our favorite international destination doesn’t seem to be losing its record-breaking popularity any time soon.

Whether you want to spend your days getting spoiled at an all-inclusive hotel, lounging around the world-class beaches, exploring the region’s rich history, or dancing the night away in one of the local nightclubs, there’s only one thing to know – Cancun is truly as good as they say.
